Mexican Irregulars

These are the first 12 models for my Poncho Villa project. I am working on Mexicans for the 1916 US intervention into the Mexican Revolution to capture Poncho Villa. I was inspired to do this project after watching The Wild Bunch which is set in basically the same period. The plan is to use Legends of the Old West for most of the games but I might use a WWI or WWII set for larger battles.

These figures are Mexican Irregulars from Old Glory. They are from pack PIM-20 and are large 28mm. I really like the sculpts. I used a white base coat for the first time in many years. Doing this reminded me of why I don't use white as a base. They are just block painted and then "dipped" in Minwax Polyshades Antique Walnut. This is a reddish-brown stain and works well for a desert look.

These guys will see table time as bandits, irregulars, armed civilians and as part of Villa's forces.

Crusader Cowboys

Some of my game friends are planning another Legends of the Old West campaign day at the end of March. I am not sure what I want to play but I have been inspired to paint some more cowboys. Here er have some cowboys from Crusader Miniatures.

More Cowboys

I am playing in a Legends of the Old West campaign day this weekend and I decided that was a good excuse to paint up some more of the huge pile of cowboy minis I have collected. These are all from Blue Moon and to me they have an early old west feel. Sort of late 1860s to early 1870s. Many of these figures are more like townsfolk or lawmen rather than cowboys.

These were speed painted in about a day and then dipped. As usual they look better in person. I am not real happy with how the pictures turned out but oh well.

Old School Stuff - Cowboys

This is my old collection of cowboys and old west figures. These are all Foundry and are very nice figures but they are showing their age. This line of figures is very small by today's standards. To give you an idea how small they are these figures are all based on 20mm squares or US Pennies.

This collection was traded to my friend Tim several years ago and I think he still has them. Most of the figures were painted by me but some were painted by my friend Dave who I got them from as part of a trade. The circle of Lead.

Old West

I recently acquired the entire set of Legends of the Old West rules and naturally, before I can play, I need to get some figures painted. I traded off all my Old West stuff several years ago, before LOTOW was released. A few months ago Old Glory had a 40% off sale for all the Old West figures they carry regardless of the manufacturer. Since I have access to the member discount the figures were actually available for 60%. Well, I don't have to tell you I bought a bunch!

These figures are all from Blue Moon and for those that are familiar some of these you cannot buy. This year's free figures for the Old Glory Army were Blue Moon old west. I have the full set of the limited addition figures. I am pleased with the figures. They are on the large side and I like the sculpts. Some of these had very pronounced mold lines and Tim will probably point out what a poor job I did in cleaning them up. Funny thing is they are not as noticeable in the flesh as they are in these pictures. Oh well.
