Fallschirmjager Reinforcements for Bolt Action

Last weekend Tim and I decided to play one last game of Bolt Action first edition.  The 2nd edition books were just hitting the stores and everyone was excited for the new rules but it didn't seem right to not have one last go at a game we have enjoyed for 4 plus years.

In an effort to get over my recently commented on game funk I decided I needed to finish up a few lingering figures before the game.  These models has sadly been on my paint bench for many YEARS.  It has take some long to finish the mortar team has actually been used in multiple games with incomplete paint - shock!

It felt really good to finish these units up and the 80mm mortar and the 105mm recoilless rifle were put to excellent effect in our game.

I am in the process of painting some more items for Bolt Action so stay tuned.

Flames of War Fallschirmjager Reinforcements

I just finished up a few odds and ends for my FoW Fallschirmjagers.  I have had these in process for more than a year but I just could not get them done.  I recently has the FJ back on the table and my love for this army was rekindled.

First up are a few extra command stands.  These will be used in various army configs where I need a command team for a small unit.

Next are three sniper teams.  I have never used snipers and I have never faced them but I am really intrigued by them.  I can;t wait to try them out as I know my regular opponents have very little experience as well.

This is the first of two character teams I painted up.  This one will be used as Major Von Der Heydte and also as an Infantry Ace if we ever do an aces campaign.

Finally we have another character team.  This one is Oberstleutnant Walter Koch.  The only time I have ever used a special character warrior team in Flames of War was at this year's Shifting Sands event.  My lack of experience meant that I did not get the full potential from the character.  I am looking forward to trying out both of these characters to see how they really work in the game.

Can It Be? More Fallschirmjagers!

I just finished up another 23 28mm Fallschirmjagers.  This is in addition 12 I did a couple of months ago (and failed to photograph and post).  This brings the collection to more than 100 of these guys!

These figures are a mix of Foundry, Black Tree and Crusader.  This addition brings me to 6 full squads and a couple of dozen extras.  I have lots of support options done now but I still have a few team left to paint.  I still need to add a PaK40 and maybe a Nebelwefer.  I also want to add some motorcycles and a kettenkrad.

Return of the Never Ending Fallschirmjager Project

It sure is a good thing I love my Fallschirmjager army for Flames of War because I swear they are multiplying in the dark.  I managed to add a few more items to the army this week.  First up is an objective marker I made using some of the special containers and figures.  This will be nice as I can stop using my half painted Brit tank objective marker.

I also finished up a couple more HQ weapons options.  First is a standard AT rifle stand.  These guys will not be getting much use unless I can get some Crete battles going.  Next is another Stummelwerfer team.  This is actually the fourth Stummelwerfer so it is not really an HQ weapon team.  I will use this when I field the full SW mortar platoon.

Finally we have the third Infantry platoon for the the army.  At first I thought I wouldn't be using this much but as I have been playing around with different list ideas I might actually get these on the table.  We will see.

With all the stuff I have painted for this army over the last two years you might think I was nearly done.  You would be wrong.  I have heavy mortars, AA guns, pioneers and artillery left.  I will be painting Fallschirmjagers for a long time to come.

Flames of War Fallschirmjager PaK40 Teams

Just a quick update before going in vacation.  I finished my FJ PaK40 teams for my Flames of War Fallschirmjager army.  These guys will get lots of use in mid and late war battles.  I did not paint the command (yet) as I plan to use the PaK36 command.  I basically can't use both platoons at the same time so it works out fine.  Next up for this project is another FJ infantry platoon.  I am gradually transitioning this army to all Battlefront miniatures with my Peter Pig and Old Glory stuff as extras for larger battles.  Maybe I will sell off the extras.

Stuck in a Fallschirmjager Rut

I have come to the conclusion that I am stuck in a bit of a rut when it comes to my World War II projects. It seems that I am painting the same Fallschirmjager force, for the same period of the war, in 15mm and 28mm. I am not sure how that happened.

he good news is I have added a fourth manufacturer to the collection - Artizan. I only have the four figures with MP44 pictured below. Artizan makes very nice figures and I know lots of people who really love them but for me there is something a little off with them. I am not sure what it is.

Next is a batch of the old Foundry Fallschirmjagers by the Perry brothers. The are nice figures but are showing their age.

I have added a bunch more Black Tree Designs Fallschirmjagers to the collection. These are mostly pioneers. This is another line of figures that is nice but a little off. The faces are scary.

Finally we have some Crusader Miniatures Fallschirmjagers. These are probably my favorite FJ figures so far. I am really going to miss adding these to the collection. With the closure of Crusader USA there is very little chance that I will be adding many more of these to the collection.

In all I have added another 45 figures to this army. Not too bad. I still have about 25 figures left to paint so keep your eyes open for more.

Even More Fallschirmjagers

I have a few more Fallschirmjagers for my Flames of War army. First are three Stummelwefer teams that are part of the company HQ. I had painted a couple of mortar team from Old Glory to use as Stummelwefers but these Battlefront minis are much better.

Next we have an FJ light gun platoon. These are the LG40 75mm recoilless guns. These will be very useful for anti-tank and against dug in infantry.

This just about finishes the first 1500 points for this army. I have a tank platoon to finish that will go with these guys. They are nearly done and I think I may get these on the table tomorrow.

Fallschirmjager Additions

Time for a couple more units for my mid-war Fallschirmjager company. For this installment we have an FJ mortar platoon equipped with GW34. These are the full size mortars and not the Stummelwerfer. These guys are only usable for mid-war and maybe early war if we ever get a FJ list for early war.

Next we have the second combat platoon. This unit allows me to finally field a legal army. I have enough figures to build a third combat platoon and when it is done I will us my original combat platoon, which is Old Glory and Peter Pig figures, as a Pioneer platoon.

So all I have left to have my first 1500 point force ready is the LG40 platoon, which is only two guns, and my Pz IV F1 platoon of three tanks. I might be able to finish this army this weekend...

Flames of War Fallschirmjager Reinforcements

After more than 10 months I have finally gotten back to my Flames of War Fallschirmjager project. This time I am adding a second HMG platoon and a PaK36 anti-tank gun platoon.

I still need to add a couple more combat platoons in order to have a legal army. I really can't wait to get this on the table. It should be a lot of fun to play.

FoW Fallschirmjager Company HQ

Today I finished the command section for my new Flames of War Fallschirmjager army. This army will be used primaraly for Tunisia and Sicily but could also do time for Crete and Italy.

First up is the Company command and the 2iC stands.

Next up are the 5cm mortar teams. These would be used for the earlier lists.

Instead of the 5cm mortars you can take the 8cm GW42 "Stummelwerfer" teams. This will be a standard unit for my army.

I don't have models yet for the standard ATR option. Below is the sPzB41 ATR team. This one will see time for Tunisia battles.

The other ATR option is the 8.8cm RW43 "Puppchen" rocket launcher. This thing packs a solid punch and will be used mostly for Sicily battles.

The figures are either Old Glory or Peter Pig.

Fallschirmjager Splittermuster 41

Just in case you were wondering if I was painting anything or just uploading a bunch of old stuff, I am actually doing both. This batch of 14 Fallschirmjagers is painted in the splittermuster 41 uniform, or at least my version of it. Turns out German camo is a pain. In fact I tried to paint this pattern a few months ago and it turned out so bad I painted over the figures. I will do a tutorial on this pattern in a future post.
This batch takes my FJ collection to about 36 models. That is about half way done.

More Fallschirmjager Progress

I had not intended to start working on this project. I have tons of other things I need to do but my comparison figures I did a couple of weeks ago were so fun to paint I couldn't stop. I thought, well, I'll just paint up the company command and then get back to important stuff.

After finishing the Company Command I thought, well, that was fast. I'll just paint up a squad.

Before I knew it I had 24 of these guys painted. As you can see I used my speed painting technique of blocking in the base colors and the using the 'Dip'. This works good but on some of these guys I don't like the flesh tones. I tried a different color for the flesh than I normally use and it is too...yuck...with the dip. Some of these will need to be touched up.

On a side note, these figures put me over 200 figures painted so far this year! Since I actually painted them about a week and half ago I already have about 40 more figures painted for other projects.

28mm Fallschirmjager Figure Comparison Part 2

Here is a follow-up to my previous post comparing different Fallschirmjager figures. Sometimes it is tough to see how well figures work together by looking at the bare metal so I thought I would paint the same three figures to see how they look. I think they look even better together painted.

28mm Fallschirmjager Figure Comparison

My friend Tom was curious about how different brands of fallschirmjager figures looked together. Here are a couple of shots. From left to right we have Crusader, Black Tree Designs, and Foundry.

While there are some stylistic differences I think these three brands look fine together. The problem is now I want to paint them.
