Here is the first figure for my "Tale of (More than) Four Gamers" challenge. This is the leader of my Beasts of Choas army.


This was a fun figure to paint, but there are a lot of fiddly details. Unfortunately, many of the details are not visible in the pictures. The light is just a little to bright.

Here are the colors used to paint this model. This will also be the theme for the entire army, I think. All colors are Vallejo.

Kiev City Militia

Here is the next installment of my Rus army for Warhammer Ancient Battles (WAB). This is my Kiev City Militia. These are generic infantry, equipped with thrusting spears and shields. I wanted them to be plain but slightly uniform in appearance. I kept the pallet more restricted than I would normally do for a dark age army.

Next up for this project will be a unit of Varjazi. This will probably take several months as I have a bunch of stuff in the painting queue.

A Tale of (More than) Four Gamers

A few of my friends and I have decided to jump into Warhammer Fantasy Battles. This is a game that, for the most part, I have had no interest in playing. I have, however, always loved the look of the Beasts of Chaos army. I finally worked out a deal to get an army so I figured, if I have an army I might as well play the game.

Most of my friends have had a similar story when if comes to WHFB. Everyone has had some level of interest but has not been compelled to jump in. I have managed to convince several of them to start an army building challenge. The players and armies are:

Robert - Beasts of Chaos
Tim K - Tomb Kings
Mike G - Lizardman
Tom O - Empire
Joe - Dwarves
Joey - Goblins

The idea is simple, pick an army you like and each month paint a set amount of points and then play some games. As our painted collections grow so will the size of the games. The starting point value is 250pts...or maybe it is 300pts...I can't remember. Anyway, we will be starting small. Each player must have atleast 2 core units and a hero is optional.

My starting 250pts force is pictured above and consists of the following:

Hero with extra hand weapon and heavy armor.

Beast Herd 1 consists of 5 Gors with sheild and 5 Ungors with sheild.

Beast Herd 2 consists of 5 Gors with extra hand weapon and 5 Ungors.

Beast Herd 3 consists of 5 Gors with extra hand weapon and 5 Ungors with sheild.

This comes to about 243 points. I will probably add sheilds to the Ungors of Herd 2. If it turns out to be 300 pts then I will add a couple more Gors to each Herd.

All together I have 31 models to paint before the first deadline of June 1. This should not be too hard as long as I don't get distracted...

Dumb Things Games Workshop Does Part 1

Update: It looks like these are still available in bulk from the GW on-line store - http://store.us.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.us?do=List_Models&code=303834&orignav=300810&ParentID=251467&GameNav=300810 . Seems like a lot of trouble for something I used to be able to get at any game store.

Today I have a small complaint. It really is a trivial thing but taken with the history of how GW manages their business it becomes really frustrating. GW no longer sells their plastic bases in packages of the same size base. It use to be (last year) that you could buy a package of 24 20mm x 20mm bases for about $6. This was a useful thing because I have recently started to base my non-GW figures on GW bases. They are cheap and available and are of a consitant size. They really are the industry standard.

Now they sell bases in an assortment pack that contains several sizes. This might be fine for the GW gamer, I don't really know, but for me it is useless. Add to that the $8 price of this assortment GW has lost several sales from me.

It looks like GaleForce 9 will be getting my money.

Black Powder

This sounds really interesting to me. The description of the game play does not sound like anything I have ever played. This one will probably be on my wish list.

114th Pennsylvania Volunteers

Here is the first part of what will be a huge American Civil War project. Here we have my version of the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry or Collis' Zouaves. I chose this unit becaus they are in my Osprey book ;-) and I also liked the look of the uniform.


First up is Colonel Charles Collis, founder of the 114th. I realy have no idea what Collis looks like and I am not sure what his uniform would have looked like. I painted this figure after looking over some re-enactor sites. There are a few liberties taken but I think he looks good and plausable.

Next is the color guard. I still need to add the regimental flag. Thanks to warflag.com for the nice ACW flags.

This is a nice picture looking down the line. I have currently based these for some playtesting of a friend's ACW game. I will also use these guys to test some the various Warhammer varients out there. I will probably end up basing these guys on 40mm x 40mm bases for Johnny Reb III.

Here is the entire regiment so far. I have 21 figures painted. These are all Foundry and are very nice figures. I will be adding 20 more figures to this unit but the extras will all be Sash and Saber. I just cannot afford to buy any more Foundry!

This ACW project has the potential to get out of hand. I have had a collection of about 160 28mm figures for several years. I was originally planning on doing Johnny Reb III in 28mm but I just never got around to it. With some of the rules that are currently in development I might be getting into the period in a big way. In fact, I just bought nearly 300 Sash and Saber when they were having their 50% off sale. Add to that the recent release of the new Perry brother's plastic 28mm ACW I am in real trouble!

Shelob

I finally finished my Shelob model. I started this project some time last year...I think. This was a real pain in the butt to build and I kind of gave-up about half-way through. Last week I got inspired and finished the assembly and I finished the paint tonight.

Turned out pretty good I think. It is a very creepy model...I hate spiders
